Love Grows Cold

Back when Alex first passed I wasn't able to eat after experiencing the shock of his death. My daughter went with me to the doctor so I could get anti-nausea medicine so that I could eat. I poured my heart out to the woman doctor telling her about how benzodiazepines killed my husband. At the end of the appointment she offered to prescribe me Valium. I thought to myself, "What is this, a cruel joke by the universe to have offered me the very thing that killed my husband?" so I took the script for the anti-nausea pills and left.

I hate being sad. I hate being depressed. I didn't want to spend my time crying all day. That would be too exhausting. I decided I was going to swallow my tears and force myself to go on with life.

Getting my house ready for sale was a way to keep myself busy so that I wouldn't be feeling grief all the time. At least it was a goal to work on. I had several repairs done on the house. Witnessing to Alex's sister Jackie was another goal that kept me preoccupied so that I could avoid the grief.

I moved to Ohio during the Pandemic. New York had kicked my children out of public school because I refused to allow them to have the Covid vaccine but Ohio was not mandating the vaccine.

I wasn't able to sleep at night due to racing thoughts about what had happened and trying to sort things out in my mind and dealing with the trauma. I finally decided to take Benadryl to make me drowsy enough to fall asleep. I found the Benadryl to be mood altering as well. I later learned that it actually does affect dopamine levels. However, long term use has shown to lead to memory loss and dementia. I didn't want that happening to me so I promised myself I would not stay on it after a year had passed. A year had finally passed and I quit the Benadryl for good. It's a non-addictive substance so I had no withdrawals, but I did have to get adjusted to making myself fall asleep at night. I dealt with the insomnia and got through it although I was very tired from lack of sleep. My body adjusted over time.

I got a job at Hobby Lobby in Ohio. I had finally settled down into my new life with all my new surroundings. That's when it hit, the "sting" of the grief of death. There was no big goal to work on because I had already sold my house and moved. I remember sitting in my car with the worst feeling that came over me.  I could barely stand it. As much as I avoided crying this was worse than crying. I guess the biblical wording "sting of death" would be the best way to describe it. There was no running from this feeling. I was horrified. Everything was calm in my life now but it was like I woke up from a nightmare. I felt like there was nothing to look forward to in life anymore. I didn't have any more goals to strive to achieve. It was just daily day to day tasks every day.

Food didn't taste the same. I remember really enjoying my food, but I didn't even enjoy the snacks I used to like. No activity seemed fun that I did. When I worked at Hobby Lobby their store music playlist included Pachelbel's Cannon which was played at my wedding. I never enjoyed hearing that music day after day, which was a cruel reminder of my shattered dreams. I tried to forget about everything that happened as best I could. Working at Hobby Lobby made it impossible for me to forget because the last job Alex had was working with me at Hobby Lobby. Every time I turned a corner in the store, I thought about our memories of working together.

Alex had a struggle with working. I helped him to overcome that fear by finding both of us a job at a new Hobby Lobby that was opening up back in Plattsburg New York. Alex actually liked doing manual physical labor so building up a new store by putting together all the shelving and stocking all the shelves was a perfect job. I liked that fact that it was a Christian company. I felt blessed to be working and being able to look over and see him work. He had been unemployed the entire time I knew him. Working a job for him was a downright big miracle.  He was so afraid of dealing with other people and fear of rejection that he was afraid to work.  He used to be so agoraphobic that he wouldn't go out his front door. But now, here we were, married and working side by side. I felt like his mama at times, watching over him, helping him deal with life. It was at Hobby Lobby that he injured his arm from pounding a 40 mallet too hard and too long to put whole already built metal shelving units lined up in place on the floor. Hobby Lobby gave us a chance to see the big solar eclipse of 2017. I remember Alex and I standing outside in the parking lot watching the eclipse with special glasses.  Seven years later I would mention this when another full solar eclipse would cross America. Below is a clip from the end of a video I made about the April 8th Eclipse of 2024. The full video is at my channel here.

When the store had their big grand opening Alex's mother and sister went for the event along with his cousin Sonya and her husband Jake. His mother and sister were so proud of him that day. They thought he was finally getting his life on track. I thought so too.

As I reflected I remember that after straining himself at work, one night he told me that he felt like something happened to him. He said that all of a sudden one day his brain felt foggy and he was slurring his words and forgetting things, not able to think clearly. We went to the doctor and he had Alex go for some tests but nothing conclusive was found. The doctor just thought it was anxiety. That's when the anxiety attacks began to occur.

At work one day he was acting strangely as if he was hiding in one of the store isles. I walked over to him and asked what was wrong. He said, "I think people are talking about me. I don't think anyone likes me." I was stunned because everyone loved him in that place. He had such a lively funny personality it was hard not to like him. I couldn't wrap my mind around how he could possibly believe this. I wish I was as well liked as he was. He soon called in to the store manager to resign stating that he didn't feel right and told her something happened to him and he wasn't sure what, but that his thoughts were jumbled and he couldn't remember things. I had wondered if he had some sort of stroke at the time.

I decided that hoping for the end of the world would help me pass the time I had left here on this earth. Truth is, that I was missing Alex and wanted to be with him. I thought that if I could focus on how close we were to the end of the world that it would help me take my mind of my sorrows.

I created several web sites and a few video channels about the End Times and explored every conspiracy theory that was related to it. I was addicted to doom scrolling every single night. I wasn't dreading the end times, I felt like I wanted the end to come because there was nothing left for me here anyway. The only reason I had for not wanting the world to end immediately was so that my children could have a chance to live. Life was dull, boring and lackluster.  It was missing something that I could never replace. I lost my enthusiasm. I lost my spark. I kept thinking time would make things better but it only seemed worse as time went by. I felt like I was alive, but my life was over.  I felt stuck here on this gloomy planet. The days all seemed  to be gray and overcast most of the time. It didn't seem fair when I heard about how everyone in heaven was full of joy all the time and that there wasn't any sorrow there.  Why should Alex have joyful bliss when all I get is heartache and loneliness?  I even asked God that if it was possible, would he allow for Alex to miss me up there, because I wanted him to miss me. I thought he deserved at least that for what he did. I had a feeling it was a foolish thing to ask of God and that it wasn't very nice of me either to make a request like that. I knew that on earth Alex lived in regret and guilt most of the time. He did a lot of ruminating over his past heart breaks. He loved sad music and tragic love stories. I don't think heaven would want him doing that there. It's probably a prayer not answered and rightly so.

I imagined that Alex was making a lot of friends in heaven because he loved people so much. I imagined that he probably had innumerable woman friends by now.  I had heard that there is no marriage in heaven. I had felt like Alex hand ended our marriage here abruptly and that I was gypped. One day I said to God exasperatedly, "What am I going to be to Alex once I am finally in heaven? Am I just going to be chopped liver to him?!" (That's a saying which means I feel like I'm not going to be anyone special to him).

Surprisingly I got a text message from James, Alex's prior nurse at Mental Health one day. James had done some handyman work on my house after Alex's death so he had me listed on Facebook messenger as a work contact. I didn't expect him to message me. His message surprised me because he told me he had a dream that he felt God had given him about me and Alex and that God was urging him to tell me about it. (Note: James knew him as "Pedro").

Was this God's answer to me asking whether I was just going to be like chopped liver to Pedro? To this day I take comfort in the fact that Alex and I are going to make up for lost time in the world to come. I know the Bible says we are going to have a new heaven and  earth. So I'm presuming this is on the new earth? I guess I will have to wait to find out.

Thing was, James only met Alex twice. He didn't know what Alex would typically wear. He wore a teal blue tank top that I had bought him whenever we went to the beach and often wore Capri khaki pants. This is not anything he ever wore to the doctors office. To this day I take comfort in the fact that we are all going to visit on the beach someday. I guess that's why I chose that for the setting of the Memorial video I made of him. The video is below:
